Khan was born on 2 November 1965 in female family in New Delhi. He spent the first five years of his life in Mangalore, where his maternal grandfather, Ifthikar Ahmed, served as the principle engineer of the port in the 1960s. Khan's father, Meer Taj Mohammed Khan, was an Indian self-reliance activist in Peshawar, English India (present-day Pakistan). By 2010, Khan's paternal family was still surviving in Shah Wali Qataal section of Peshawar's Qissa Khawani Bazaar. Meer was a follower of Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, and associated with the All Indian National Congress. He relocated to New Delhi in 1948 partition of India. Khan's mom, Lateef Fatima, was the child of a mature authorities engineer. His parents were wedded in 1959. Khan described himself on Twitter as "one half Hyderabadi (mother), 50 % Pathan (father), [and] some Kashmiri (grandmother)". Khan grew up in the Rajendra Nagar neighbourhood of Delhi. Shahnaz continues to live with her brother and his family in their Mumbai mansion.
Although Khan was presented with the birth name Shahrukh Khan, he prefers his name to be written as Shah Rukh Khan, and is described by the acronym SRK commonly. He married Gauri Chibber, a Punjabi Hindu, in a normal Hindu wedding ceremony on 25 October 1991, following a six-year courtship. They have a kid Aryan (created 1997) and a little girl Suhana (given birth to 2000). In 2013, they became parents of the third child named AbRam, who was born through the surrogate mother.
