Khan was created on 2 November 1965 in lady family in New Delhi. He spent the first five years of his life in Mangalore, where his maternal grandfather, Ifthikar Ahmed, served as the principle engineer of the port in the 1960s. Corresponding to Khan, his paternal grandfather, Jan Muhammad, an ethnic Pathan was from Afghanistan. Shah Rukh Khan also said in his interviews that he's a Pathan from Peshawar and his complete family used to speak Hindko dialect at home. Khan's daddy, Meer Taj Mohammed Khan, was an Indian freedom activist in Peshawar, British India (present-day Pakistan). By 2010, Khan's paternal family was still surviving in Shah Wali Qataal portion of Peshawar's Qissa Khawani Bazaar. Meer was a follower of Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, and associated with the All Indian National Congress. He transferred to New Delhi in 1948 partition of India. Khan's mother, Lateef Fatima, was the child of a mature government engineer. His parents were married in 1959. Khan detailed himself on Twitter as "50 percent Hyderabadi (mother), half Pathan (father), [and] some Kashmiri (grandmother)". His paternal cousins in Peshawar claim that the family is of Hindkowan source from Kashmir, not Pashtun, and contradict the declare that his grandfather was from Afghanistan also.

He married Gauri Chibber, a Punjabi Hindu, in a normal Hindu marriage ceremony on 25 October 1991, after having a six-year courtship. They have a son Aryan (created 1997) and a child Suhana (delivered 2000). In 2013, they became parents of any third child called AbRam, who was simply born through a surrogate mother. Relating to Khan, while he believes in Islam firmly, he also prices his wife's religious beliefs. His children follow both religions; at home the Qur'an can be found next to the Hindu deities.
