Khan was born on 2 November 1965 in a Muslim family in New Delhi. Khan referred to himself on Twitter as "1 / 2 Hyderabadi (mom), 1 / 2 Pathan (father), [and] some Kashmiri (grandmother)". His paternal cousins in Peshawar claim that the family is of Hindkowan origin from Kashmir, not Pashtun, and contradict the claim that his grandfather was from Afghanistan also.



Khan grew in the Rajendra Nagar neighbourhood of Delhi up. His father had several businesses including a restaurant, and the grouped family resided a middle-class life in rented rentals. Khan attended St. Columba's Institution in central Delhi where he excelled in his studies and in sports activities such as hockey and sports, and received the school's highest award, the Sword of Honour. In his youngsters, he acted in stage has and received praise for his imitations of Bollywood stars, which his favourites were Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Mumtaz and Bachchan.
