He spent the first five years of his life in Mangalore, where his maternal grandfather, Ifthikar Ahmed, served as the principle engineer of the port in the 1960s. Relating to Khan, his paternal grandfather, Jan Muhammad, an ethnic Pathan was from Afghanistan. Shah Rukh Khan also said in his interviews that he's a Pathan from Peshawar and his entire family used to speak Hindko terms at home. Khan's father, Meer Taj Mohammed Khan, was an Indian freedom activist in Peshawar, English India (present-day Pakistan). By 2010, Khan's paternal family was still surviving in Shah Wali Qataal region of Peshawar's Qissa Khawani Bazaar. His paternal cousins in Peshawar claim that the family is of Hindkowan source from Kashmir, not Pashtun, and also contradict the declare that his grandfather was from Afghanistan.

After Hansraj, he began studying for a master's level in Mass Marketing communications at Jamia Millia Islamia, but kept to follow his acting profession. He also attended the National College of Theatre in Delhi during his early profession in Bollywood. His daddy died of tumors in 1981, and his mother passed away in 1991 from issues of diabetes. Following the death of the parents, his more mature sister, Shahnaz Lalarukh, delivered in 1960, fell into a depressed Khan and status needed on the duty of caring for her. Shahnaz continues to live with her brother and his family in their Mumbai mansion.

Although Khan was presented with the delivery name Shahrukh Khan, he prefers his name to be written as Shah Rukh Khan, and is often referred to by the acronym SRK. He married Gauri Chibber, a Punjabi Hindu, in a traditional Hindu marriage ceremony on 25 October 1991, after having a six-year courtship. They have a boy Aryan (blessed 1997) and a girl Suhana (delivered 2000). In 2013, they became parents of any third child called AbRam, who was born through the surrogate mother. According to Khan, while he firmly feels in Islam, he also values his wife's religious beliefs. His children follow both religions; at home the Qur'an can be found next to the Hindu deities.
